About Groundwork Academy

Build the Farm.  Build the Business.  Build the Life.

Groundwork Academy was founded to help farmers, ranchers, veterans, homesteaders, and agricultural entrepreneurs build resilient agricultural businesses through practical education, systems thinking, and intentional planning.

Rather than teaching isolated techniques, Groundwork integrates production, business planning, infrastructure, financial management, and marketing into one complete educational framework that helps students build farms designed for long-term success.

Grounded in real-world agricultural experience and strengthened through collaboration with educators, researchers, military veterans, and industry professionals, Groundwork Academy equips students with the knowledge and planning tools needed to transform ideas into working farm systems.

Groundwork Academy was founded on the belief that successful farms are built through intentional planning, practical education, and informed decision-making.

Our Story

Groundwork Academy began with a simple realization: while aspiring farmers have access to more information than ever before, very few have access to a structured planning process that helps them build a successful agricultural business.

Over years of teaching, farming, and working alongside hundreds of students, it became clear that most people were not struggling because they lacked passion or effort. They were struggling because they lacked an integrated framework that connected production, infrastructure, finances, labor, and markets into a single plan.

Groundwork Academy was created to bridge that gap. Today, the Academy brings together practical agricultural experience, business planning, systems thinking, and collaboration with educators, researchers, military veterans, and industry professionals to help students build resilient farms, successful businesses, and meaningful lives.

Mission

Building Resilient Agricultural Businesses
Groundwork Academy equips farmers, ranchers, veterans, homesteaders, and agricultural entrepreneurs with the knowledge, planning tools, and business systems needed to build successful agricultural enterprises through practical, systems-based education.

Vision

Strengthening Agriculture Through Education

We envision a future where intentional planning, sound business practices, and practical agricultural education help create profitable farms, stronger rural communities, and resilient local food systems.

Education Philosophy

Planning Before Spending
Groundwork teaches students to make informed decisions before making expensive ones. Every lesson, worksheet, and planning tool is designed to help students understand how individual decisions affect the entire farm business, creating confidence before implementation.

Douglas Havemann is the Founder and Lead Instructor of Groundwork Academy, where he developed the Groundwork educational framework, the Working Farm Plan methodology, the Enterprise Decision Workbook, and the Academy's institutional governance system. Through Groundwork Academy, he has taught hundreds of beginning farmers, helping them transform ideas into resilient agricultural businesses.
